NYE Bash is Imminent!

First of all, I can’t believe I spelled ‘imminent’ correctly on my first try.

Secondly, this Friday is New Years Eve and hopefully you know what that means by now…It’s almost time for The Black Tie Booty Ball! Unless you’ve been under a rock these past few weeks (rocks get bad internet service, we understand), you might have heard that we are throwing a sweet little bash in our hometown of San Francisco in honor of advancing the calendar. We’ve got the Beatery DJs and a few guests on a bumpin’ sound system (word from the soundcheck last night is that there is BASS, so don’t worry, it’s confirmed!), bar with drink specials, free champagne toast at midnight, and a great, intimate space for you to shake your ass all over.

OH! and every day this week leading up to the party we are giving away a free BOTTLE of champagne to one random ticket holder. If you don’t have a ticket yet, you ain’t in the drawing, so what are you waiting for? We got bass, bottles, beats, and love for everyone.

Tickets are currently only $20 and going fast:
GET THE FULL INFO, FREE MIXES, AND TICKETS HERE!

Who loves you? See you on Friday!

As Heard on TV - Cudi & Aoki

Beat Du Jour, Electrohouse, Hip Hop, Indie Dance1 Comment

This commercial has been out for a while (and spawned a full series), but somehow I’d never seen it until this past week. Yes, it appears Kid Cudi and Steve Aoki are the latest to sell out err, get more publicity and a big paycheck from Coke’s Vitamin Water. I wonder how they can use Aoki’s sick remix of “Pursuit of Happiness” when it’s never been officially released? I guess the number one brand in the world has it’s ways.

Speaking of Coke and Vitamin Water did you know that they are now getting sued? John Robbins in his Huffington Post piece explains:

Coca-Cola is being sued by a non-profit public interest group, on the grounds that the company’s vitaminwater products make unwarranted health claims. No surprise there. But how do you think the company is defending itself?

In a staggering feat of twisted logic, lawyers for Coca-Cola are defending the lawsuit by asserting that “no consumer could reasonably be misled into thinking vitaminwater was a healthy beverage.”

Does this mean that you’d have to be an unreasonable person to think that a product named “vitaminwater,” a product that has been heavily and aggressively marketed as a healthy beverage, actually had health benefits?

Or does it mean that it’s okay for a corporation to lie about its products, as long as they can then turn around and claim that no one actually believes their lies?

Wow. Just, wow. What if this worked in real life? I tell my boss:

me: “I think you’re pretty stupid, childish, and smell like shit. I even got Kid Cudi and Steve Aoki to do a song about it”

my boss: “You’re fired”

me: “Hey now, come on. Any reasonable boss would know I was just making that stuff up. Don’t believe everything you hear.”

This sucks ‘cuase now I can’t be hyped that this fantastic remixed has a national stage! Ohh well, leave it to Coke to spoil our Pursuit Of Happiness.

Merry Christmas and a belated Happy Hanukkah everyone! As I’m sure is the case with you dear readers, we here at the Beatery are very much in the midst of hectic holiday and end-of-year preparations. We’re finishing our shopping, visiting families, baking pies, writing So You Think You Can Bump posts, and hey, did we mention we’re throwing an epic New Years Eve party? All told, we’re as busy as a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest, so we’re going to take a short break from the blogging. We’ll be back next week with a final post of the year (maybe), and then we’re going to rock Coffee Bar like it’s never been rocked before. (Literally. This will be the first dance party ever at the venue.)

But before we leave you to your eggnog and figgy pudding, why not unwrap a little Christmas cheer to get you through the holiday break? It’s a pretty nice haul, if I do say so myself: including a fun Beatles mini-mix by A Skillz, recent Plumps and Krafty sets, and- hey, what’s that that the bottom of the stocking? A new Mylo remix? He’s back?! It’s a Christmas miracle!

Happy holidays, everyone.

(Update 12/25- Santa left some more tracks under the tree! Ho ho ho!!)

And here we go with producer number 7 in our epic battle to the bass laden throne for our annual producer spinoff - So You Think You Can Bump 2010! Check out all the nominees here

For this new entry into the SYTYCB2010 championship, another dutchman, but with quite a different sound, Rafael Frost.

Frost combines elements of electro, glitchy shuffled techno, and a whole lotta hammer to the trance flow and mixes them up maëlstrom of sound that is completely enveloping and just. so. massive! The scale of them seems completely different than the modern trance trend towards more housey beats - his are beasts just waiting to be let out…in a huge arena!

Rafael has done some great stuff this year - enough to get him selected by Ferry Corsten as his favorite producer of 2010.

Let’s see a sampling of what he can slam us with…

If you’d asked me back in January whether I’d bet that the former singer of a post-hardcore band from LA and poster child for Myspace self-congratulatory emoting* would make it into the top producer list here on the Beatery, I would have said “stop making fun of me”. But I’d have been wrong, and sometimes being wrong is super awesome.

*no offense
