Unexpected Beauty

Ambient, We're just sayin'...2 Comments

Below is a 36-minute piece of ambient music. If you asked me to describe it after hearing for the first time, I’d likely use the words ethereal, watery, haunting… adjectives that bear no resemblance to the ones I’d use to describe the piece’s original source. Give the track a listen, enough to experience its lulls and swells (go ahead and skip around if you don’t have half an hour to spare) and then hit the link to learn what you’re listening to.

OMG the Future is Now

Crafty people have done some amazing things with digital DJ control surfaces, but this really takes it to the next level. I want one.

The surface is rear projection on a glass plate with multi-touch capabilities. It seems like a really awesome way to show people that you are actually crafting beats up there, and not just checking your email.

“emulator” on töken concept from yöyen munchausen on Vimeo.

The surface is called Token, and there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of info out there.

Redial

Beat Du Jour, Electrohouse, We're just sayin'...1 Comment

Redial is a dude from Sydney, Australia who has been unleashing neon electro bangers on us from down under for a few years now. I tend to think of him as part of an unofficial, global triumvirate of hipster house producers, including Toxic Avenger from Paris and El Paso’s Le Castle Vania. Their styles are similar enough that you’d think they got together and planned it, but Redial is easily the most melodic out of the three which makes him my favorite. It’s like getting hit in the stomach with a disco ball. Too much of this stuff would get tiring but at just the right time it can really rock your world.

Redial does make his own tracks, and while they are both hooky and hard-hitting, remixing others is where he really shines. He doesn’t have the highest output in the world, but I am always happy to hear new work and his latest batch definitely does not disappoint. We Won’t Stop in particular is quickly becoming one of my favorite tracks in this style. The synth line during the climax just kills me every time.

I’ve included We Won’t Stop, a great Miike Snow remix (hear the original here), and an older original track below. Also, as luck would have it, I will be debuting a new mix for the podcast this Friday which will very likely contain yet another Redial track. So if you like what you hear today, be sure to tune in on Friday for more!

Mux Mool - Skulltaste

Downtempo, Hip Hop, IDM, Trip Hop, We're just sayin'...No Comments

Back In The Day* I was a really big fan of Ghostly International, a record label specializing in offbeat dance and experimental electronic music. Among other things, they deserve credit for breaking cutting edge club artists like Matthew Dear/Audion and Lusine. Unfortunately, Ghostly also had a streak of what one might at times refer to as capital-A Artistry, which meant a slow (d)evolution towards experimental pop and textural headphone masturbation that is all well and good in the grand scope of Music, but I missed my fresh beats too much to care and gradually lost interest.

Maybe this was just my own personal experience, or maybe Ghostly woke up and was ready to get funky again, but in either case they have gone and released what is currently my favorite album of 2010 to date; Mux Mool’s excellent Skulltaste. It’s an 80 minute bounce-fest that never gets tiring; it really does have something for everyone. Drunken Game Boy beats bounce around memorable melodies with an offbeat charm that carries through from beginning to end. If it had a solid vocalist it would be the best hip-hop album of the year, hands down.

RCRDLBL has been kind enough to host the whole album for streaming, which is something I wish more artists and labels would allow. Highlights include Breakfast Enthusiast, Get Better John, and Wolf Tone Symphony, but I definitely suggest you just hit play and let it run.

I don’t know about you all, but I find this both totally awesome and incredibly reassuring that getting old doesn’t have to mean getting boring.

Courtesy of CBS News, March 4th, 2010:

“DJ Ruth Flowers just wants the kids to have fun. Flowers is a 69-year-old Disk Jockey who spins at the most prestigious nightclubs in Paris”.

Check out her myspace and personal site for tons more videos and some samples of her forthcoming original single:
