When I first started playing tracks from Jerome Isma-Ae, I thought for some reason he was from Israel. Not at all - he’s a native of Munich, Germany, just with a crazy sounding name. Either way, that guy has production down.
While you wouldn’t call him the most versatile of producers in terms of the range of sounds or techniques he uses (he definitely has a recognizable style), his tracks end up showing a crazy versatility in that they’re playable in all sorts of contexts — big room, small room, along with house, progressive, trance, techno, even that slow progressive psytrance that Iboga Records is famous for (and Iboga has to be a future topic! wow).
To span all these possibilities, a production has to be bang-on-the-money, and Jerome delivers some fracken killer grooves somewhere between progressive house and tribal…
Here’s some choice tunes from the man. Not necessarily the most famous, but some of my faves…
I had the pleasure of meeting LA-based producer Nicholas Bennison when I worked for Looq records back in the day.
Originally from the UK, Nicholas is a killer producer and DJ. He’s a genre chameleon, switching from melodic progressive to trance, tech-trance, and full-on psy, and his sound has gotten the attention of some of the biggest names in the biz, and he’s done original work and remixes for a crap-ton of labels, including legendary Hook Recordings.
He tends to keep it pretty tough and rolling - as reflected in his own sound and also that of his label Propulsion Records.
This set from him from 2004 runs the gamut of sounds, and is chock full of solid tunes. I grabbed it from his website at the time of release back when and it’s been with me ever since! Actually, I remember it from a particular night of it playing in my car while I ferried Jondi and Spesh between gigs on NYE…
It makes killer road music - so burn yourself a copy for the road to Black Rock if you’re going to BM this year — it will definitely keep the journey interesting.
Laura Pedersen, aka DJ Lahbug, has been rocking dancefloors in some of the Bay Area’s best clubs for the past three years with some killer prog and trance sounds. She’s throwing down some serious love here for The Beatery with a set inspired first by emotion, but also, she confesses, by a tantalizing bottle of perrier jouet rose champagne that was taunting her during a recent gig in Vegas…
This mix is a mix-tape length (~45 min) collection of trance that makes me happy; uplifting, spiritual, sentimental yet bangy trance. So often as trance djs, we get caught in the 140bpm bubble (my car even says “I <3 140bpm" haha) and everything is just bang-bang-bang for your entire set, and we omit the emotion that makes a set connect with people. So, hopefully this set reaches somebody on a more emotional level. I think my favorite track is Never Fade Away, followed by Every Other Way at a close second. Jes's voice just kills me!
Whoa. Just moments ago I was yet a mere guest DJ and now I have been initiated into the hallowed halls and clandestine logins of the secret order of the Beatery.
And man, am I stoked to be here!
I’m honored that Cor, Jay, and Matt have welcomed me in to be part of the family!
I’ll be giving some major love to the realms of progressive, trance, and my secret dark lover drum n bass, so stay tuned…
I was planning for my first post as a resident editor to be super bangin, but then I got all spacey…^_^
I spent last weekend in bliss, dancing and DJing under the stars.
Out near Willits, in the middle of the forest, there’s no light pollution (except for the trippy lasers on the dancefloor!), so the whole of the night starscape is your playground — surrounded by swirling rhythms and flashing lights on the ground, then you look up and the vault of the heavens expands in every direction.
Then when your body tires, nothing beats laying down on the grass, looking upwards, and letting the vastness consume you.
This mix was made just after returning, and is born out of that feeling — of staring at the nocturnal sky in awe.

Whassup my peoples? I’m just letting all my homies down here in Bolivia know that I’ll be playing at a club this Friday. But fear not if you can’t make it to La Paz to see me. If all goes well I’ll record this set and use it for a podcast! Unfortunately as I’m playing from 9:00 - 9:45 pm it might not be the livest set ever, but we’ll see what we can do.
Anyway, I wanted to throw some songs out here for you guys to check out and give me some feedback on. I’ve been grooving on these for a while but haven’t yet had the chance to drop a single one live. Take a minute to listen and vote for your fav, I’ll include the winner in the set fo sho:
Ahhh Bob Sinclar. He’s like the Timbaland of Latin America. Throw in Mano Chao and a dash Shabba Ranks and you got a hot, steamy… dance floor banger! What, where did you think I was going with that?
Our top 5 SYTYCB artist is back with a brand new electro house banger, this one straight from the number one slot on the Beatport sales charts. Note to Deadmau5: I know you make these songs with relative ease, I know you think most of the DJs that play your tracks are hacks, but come on, just a little effort naming would go a long way in making you look not like such a douche. Thanks.
This songs hits. Beatery favorite Lazy Rich just gets sick with Fatboy Slim’s classic. If it wins it might be just me and the bar tender, but I don’t care I’ll get my groove on anyway. Can’t help but shake it to this one.
Hey so did you get the memo about this track being “The Official Trance Energy Anthem” of 2010?? Well in case you’ve been living under a rock I just wanted to let you know. ‘Cause, I don’t want you to be embarrassed or anything next time you go to a party and all your friends are talking about “The Official Trance Energy Anthem” and you kind of nod, half smile and stare at the floor in hopes that no one figures out that you’re the ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD that doesn’t know what the official “The Official Trance Energy Anthem” is! It’s like not knowing about gum. Or the number two. I hear Obama is even gonna make Sadner Van Doorn his “Offical Trance Energy Czar”… kidding aside tho, I do really like the track and we need some trance representation.
