Derek Ryan - Boa Viagem

boaviagem

Boa Viagem is a strip of beach and glass in the northeast part of Brasil. The city meets the sea here - urban Recife gives way to palms and sand, and expansive shoreline up and down the coast farther than the eye can see, framed by high rises on one side and emerald surf on the other.

Likewise, this mix is a combination of sweet sensual breezes and hard technology, with a dash of surrealism.
Between lighter walks on the sands in the morning, and the patter of tropical rain in the afternoon, moving into street darkness and mechanical wonders at night, to a dawn over the surf, a serving of progressive house to take you through the sun cycle on Boa Viagem.

Fulla Stars

Whoa. Just moments ago I was yet a mere guest DJ and now I have been initiated into the hallowed halls and clandestine logins of the secret order of the Beatery.

And man, am I stoked to be here!
I’m honored that Cor, Jay, and Matt have welcomed me in to be part of the family!
I’ll be giving some major love to the realms of progressive, trance, and my secret dark lover drum n bass, so stay tuned…

I was planning for my first post as a resident editor to be super bangin, but then I got all spacey…^_^

I spent last weekend in bliss, dancing and DJing under the stars.

Out near Willits, in the middle of the forest, there’s no light pollution (except for the trippy lasers on the dancefloor!), so the whole of the night starscape is your playground — surrounded by swirling rhythms and flashing lights on the ground, then you look up and the vault of the heavens expands in every direction.

Then when your body tires, nothing beats laying down on the grass, looking upwards, and letting the vastness consume you.

This mix was made just after returning, and is born out of that feeling — of staring at the nocturnal sky in awe.

Well well, look at this. The ol’ Beatery Podcast has been around long enough that we’re inviting our guests back for a second go around. And who better to kick off round two than our very first guest podcaster ever, DJ Derek Ryan. With the love the classic trance mixes have been getting lately, I’m sure this mix, featuring Derek’s superb track selection and seamless mixing will be appreciated by the Beatery regulars. Great to have you back, Derek. Thanks for hooking us up once again. - cor

This February, it snowed in Tokyo - just enough to provide a frost on roofs and dance around you as you walked through the morning chill, and melt in your breath as you blow on your hands to warm them.

This mix is full of songs with a little crystalline frost - just a bitaround the edges at first in the morning, coming up for a bright spot in the afternoon, then getting colder and deeper towards evening with a brisk chill in the air, till you get to the warmth of home at the end.

Within find a bit of melody, a touch of tech, some icy synthesis, some warming vocals - progressive and trance for the season!

Alright! We’d like to welcome DJ Derek Ryan as our first guest podcaster to the Beatery. Derek is a good friend and an awesome DJ and for this first podcast he’s been kind enough to donate some truly epic progressive breaks and trance to our humble little blog.  But enough from me, I’ll let him explain the set… well, kinda. - cor

Having Darth Vader start out your night isn’t always a good thing, but in this case it is, because you get to use the force back, or at least have a psychic experience. True, no one hands you a lightsaber, but with a healthy dose of acid blaster and some rolling bass you aughta be able to destroy the Death Star. Yay! Rejoicing and pretty melodics!

But then, some mofo has gone and built ANOTHER damn Death Star. WTF? Off to get activated and fly out and blast the fracker out of the sky, flying through a trench on the way and then finally - pwnage. Little ewoks playing melodic nu skool. A happy ending, but not that kind.

This mix is a space battle and an underground party night all in one. Where’s my wookie?
