This week our podcast is a LIVE performance by Future Universal’s DJ KidHack from California Academy of Science’s Nightlife event (at which I had the great fortune to play again the other week) and it is a whopper of Tropical Bass delight.

What is “Tropical Bass” you ask? Why, how fortunate it is for the uninitiated that we have such an excellent example RIGHT HERE. Nocturnal, misty, and tribal, be warned that it’ll probably give your spirit panther boners.

If you dig the sweaty vibes and don’t mind the mosquitos, check out KidHack’s home on these here internets for tons more music.

DJ Lahbug - Champagne Magnum

DJ Lahbug

Laura Pedersen, aka DJ Lahbug, has been rocking dancefloors in some of the Bay Area’s best clubs for the past three years with some killer prog and trance sounds. She’s throwing down some serious love here for The Beatery with a set inspired first by emotion, but also, she confesses, by a tantalizing bottle of perrier jouet rose champagne that was taunting her during a recent gig in Vegas…

This mix is a mix-tape length (~45 min) collection of trance that makes me happy; uplifting, spiritual, sentimental yet bangy trance. So often as trance djs, we get caught in the 140bpm bubble (my car even says “I <3 140bpm" haha) and everything is just bang-bang-bang for your entire set, and we omit the emotion that makes a set connect with people. So, hopefully this set reaches somebody on a more emotional level. I think my favorite track is Never Fade Away, followed by Every Other Way at a close second. Jes's voice just kills me!

unk’l funk’l - The Sunday Blues

This week, back by popular demand, we have the one and only unk’l funk’l with a follow up to his first Beatery podcast. Well, it’s not so much a follow up as a bit of history. I’ll let him explain… - c

The Sunday Blues was the beginning of unk’l funk’l.

I started dj’ing in the late 1990’s and I have had several DJ names over the years - Presence, divided, etc. I got to a place where I was bored with house…bored with breaks…just bored. One night Erica and I were over in Oakland house-sitting and I was in the basement listening to music. Half drunk on IPA, I brought the tempo of everything down. It sounded good, damn good. Digital loop based mixing with racks of effects became a playground that lit that creative fire I so needed. This mix, for me, is fun. It combines all the elements I tend to love in music. It’s light, it’s dark, it’s creepy, it’s sweet…and damn…every time I listen to it…I go somewhere new. Riddled with issues, I want to remix this set. However, I have gone back so many times to find these tracks but unfortunately lost most of them in the depths of my collection due to an ID3 Tag issue. Some day I will find them, but for now I am currently working on its sequel – A Bluer Sunday (aren’t I original – HA!)

Take care, Beatery, I hope you enjoy a bit of my beginnings.

B/Rent - The Tempo is Down

I have to apologize in advance. I usually like keep my posts pretty chipper here on the Beatery, but this has been one hard week. One that has left me emotionally drained and with neither the time nor the temper to lay down the typical pounding electro set for you, our loyal listeners. So, in place of my own podcast I went to a Beatery favorite, Brent Northey, and he gave me just what I needed for both the blog and my week… a nice long set of soothing downtempo. Like a shot of bourbon after a long day, this mix washes over me and makes everything comfortably numb, at least for a little while. I’ve been listening to it all week. The chill stuff isn’t our usual podcast fare, but for me it’s just what the doctor ordered. If you’re a fan of Tosca, Mushroom Jazz and the like, press play and let this one take the edge off. And thanks again Brent, you really helped me out with this one.

WASSUP!! Sorry for the podcast delay this week, but sometimes when things get shipped to you from far away they can get held up in transit. Our guest this week is the illustrious DJ Jon Barnes, and he has sent us a mix all the way from the east coast, recorded in one take, and edited/mastered on a train. He’s just that savage.

Jon is a friend of mine from waaaaaay back in The Old(e) Days. We used to play in a rock band together, parted ways for a while, and as fate would have it, found common ground again as fellow DJs. On top of being a solid selektah and generally great dude, Jon was also co-host of the Big Love Show on KUSF Stanford University radio. He graciously had Cor and myself as guests on several occasions (at least one of which has been posted here), and we are happy to have the chance to return the favor.

Jon’s mix is a solid 60 minutes of tech, minimal, and progressive house. Expertly mixed, and never dull, I think you’ll dig it. Enjoy!
