Well well, look at this. The ol’ Beatery Podcast has been around long enough that we’re inviting our guests back for a second go around. And who better to kick off round two than our very first guest podcaster ever, DJ Derek Ryan. With the love the classic trance mixes have been getting lately, I’m sure this mix, featuring Derek’s superb track selection and seamless mixing will be appreciated by the Beatery regulars. Great to have you back, Derek. Thanks for hooking us up once again. - cor

This February, it snowed in Tokyo - just enough to provide a frost on roofs and dance around you as you walked through the morning chill, and melt in your breath as you blow on your hands to warm them.

This mix is full of songs with a little crystalline frost - just a bitaround the edges at first in the morning, coming up for a bright spot in the afternoon, then getting colder and deeper towards evening with a brisk chill in the air, till you get to the warmth of home at the end.

Within find a bit of melody, a touch of tech, some icy synthesis, some warming vocals - progressive and trance for the season!

i just heard that Tritonal track the other day though I can’t remember where. Normally I don’t go for vocals in my Trance but the little snippets here are really pleasant.

thx! yeah, generally I agree with you - one reason why I have real troubles with listening to Tiesto/etc…I figure vocals have their place ONLY when they can form part of the groove - we ain’t making pop tracks here, ya know?

some vox are damn good tho and really add to the vibe.
most of the time the lyrics don’t even really matter then - they’re more of a device, another instrument, etc…

  3. [...] Today I have the great pleasure to present “Optera”, the first official release from Derek Ryan.  If you don’t know, Derek is a San Francisco based trance DJ/producer, friend of ours and all around great guy.  He’s done two podcasts for us here at The Beatery, the first as our first ever guest DJ and more recently “Setagaya Snow”.
