I mean, there’s not much I can really say about myself that hasn’t already been screamed by millions of adoring fans, so why try? Instead, how about a list? Cor’s Top 5 Favorite Electronic Music Tracks of All Time Ever:

1. Around the World by Daft Punk
Okay, I know it’s as played out as a song can get, but it’s still everything that’s right about house music. The video rocks as well.

2. Banstyle/Sappys Curry by Underworld
Like most Underworld songs, this one gets amazing around minute 6, which, regrettably, is where this clip cuts off. Just buy the album, it’s arguably their best.

3. Flutter by Bonobo
It may be third on this list, but if I made a list of glockenspiel-centric downtempo tracks, this would easily be number one.

4. Dorset Perception by Shpongle
This song has so many acoustic instruments in it, I almost hesitate to call it electronic music.

5. Blue Room by The Orb
The forty minute long version is the one I recommend, but youtube has its limits.

This set has nothing to do with muppets, I just thought the name Electric Mayhem, shamelessly ripped-off from the band pictured above, was an appropriate title. Seriously, with the number of sets I’ve recorded in my time I should know that I’m headed for trouble when I try to include ALL my recent favorites regardless of how well the songs work together. In this case, I couldn’t decide between my latest banging electrohouse or funky breaks tracks, so naturally I included both. What resulted is the set below: a chaotic hodgepodge that ricochets back and forth between the two styles like a bowling ball on one of those kiddie bumper lanes… which isn’t to say it’s bad. Like bumper bowling, or the muppets for that matter, it’s a wild and unpredictable good time that the kids are sure to enjoy. Turn it up loud, and keep funkin’ that chicken.

Happy Podcast Friday everyone! It’s a been a while since we’ve posted a brand-new set, opting instead for some classic retro mixes for the last few podcasts. Well, I’m pleased to announce that we’re back to our usual menu of freshly-blended beats for the foreseeable future (which is about two weeks here at the Beatery.)

Today’s podcast was recorded live last Thursday when I guest DJ’d at a friend’s biweekly event, Living Room Sessions. I’ve been meaning to record a slower, funkier mix like this since we started the blog, and the chill crowd at Mars Bar the other night gave me the opportunity. The mixing is a bit dodgy (sorry, they had beer), but it contains a nice blend of fun tracks I rarely get to spin and some old favorites I’m sure many of you will recognize. My thanks to Mark for having me over to his ‘living room’ to play, and all the wonderful Pancake and Duck Pond crew who came out that night. I had a great time.

BUUUUUUUUUURNIIIIIIIIIIING MAAAAAAAN! WOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Are you excited? I fucking am. I’m posting this podcast a day early so you can download it in time for your pilgrimage to the playa, should you need more driving music. I originally set out to make this mix five hours long, to last the entire trip from San Francisco to Black Rock City, but when I finished selecting tracks and mixing them together, well, it turned out to be just forty five minutes. Strange.

I gotta say, this summer feels like it’s been the longest in recent memory, and unfortch, it’s also been a bit of a dry spell for new music. Since I didn’t exactly have a grip of new tracks to share with you, I’ve just mixed together some of the songs I’ve been spinning live this summer that always seem to get a good crowd reaction. What this means for Beatery regulars is that a large percentage of this mix is gonna sound a bit familiar. Just consider it a ‘Greatest Hits’ set (or summer reruns, if you’re one of those ‘glass is half-empty’ people.)

Okay, now that I’ve talked myself down, it’s time to talk myself back up by telling you all to come out to hear me spin on the playa! I’ve got two gigs thus far, both at the beginning of the week, so if you’re gonna be out there early, come to the following locations to dance your dusty ass off!

DJ Cor - Is This Tech House?

I know there’s a lot of confusion in the music world about tech house. The definition is actually pretty straight forward, let me break it down for you: it’s a style of techno that draws on house’s soulful and funky elements. Oh wait, no I’m sorry, I have that backwards. It’s a style of house that features the percussive and deep elements of techno. Right? Okay, I’m pretty sure it’s kind of deep and hypnotic most of the time. Unless it’s the hard and shuffly kind. Is shuffly even a word?

See, here’s the problem: Take all the different styles of both techno and house (deep, minimal, hard, soulful, etc), and know that any piece of music combining elements from two or more of these subgenres could rightly be called tech house. It’s a broad genre, and after years of categorizing electronic music, I still don’t have a solid definition, I just know it when I hear it.

That said, most of the set below I wouldn’t actually call tech house. I initially set out to record a tech house mix, but I discovered that I really only have about ten tracks that I could say with confidence are undeniably, certifiably, officially 100% tech house… and none of those tracks mixed all that well. So instead, what you’ve got here is a mix of techy electro house that gets a bit progressive towards the end and has a breakbeat track in the middle for some reason. The only songs on here that I can say for sure are tech house are the third and fourth tracks, because they both use samples like house, but also have elements of, um – ah, fuck it, I give up. Just enjoy the music.

Okay, so below (after the proverbial jump) is a short rant about putting together a mix. If you’re not interested in the creation of DJ sets and just came to hear some breaks, no problem, that’s why I put the player up top this time. For everyone else, allow me to geek-out for a second…

Putting together a mix, even a short one, can be a frustrating experience. Sometimes, even though you’ve got all these great new songs and you can’t wait to bring them all together into a set, they just don’t want to work together. They’re in different keys, genres, energy levels… for one reason or another they just won’t mix. When this happens DJing isn’t fun, it’s like pulling teeth. You keep trying out different tracks with the hope that one of them will bring it all together, maybe experimenting with tracks you don’t even like all that much but you’d settle for them if they helped you get through to the others. This sucks. When it happens, often it’s best just to scrap the whole thing and wait for some new songs to come along before you try again.

And then occasionally you’re lucky enough to have the opposite experience. All the new tracks that you just can’t wait spin together just happen to compliment each other and the mixes present themselves with hardly any effort at all. It’s like dropping puzzle pieces on a table and watching them land right-side up and in the correct orientation. All you have to do is snap them together and you’re done.

This mix was one of the latter cases. Most of these tracks I acquired in the last couple weeks, and I was surprised to find how well they all fit. Almost the entire set came together in less than an hour. What’s even more fortunate about this is that since I haven’t spun nu skool breaks in several years (hence the name of the mix) I didn’t have that many tracks to work with. If I got stuck, I’d be STUCK. Luckily I only needed one bridge track* and I found that one pretty fast.

I’d be curious to hear if other DJs have similar experiences when trying to record demo sets; either the set from hell that just won’t come together, or that effortless flow with a set that mixes itself. If you’re a DJ reading this, let me know. Maybe I’m over-thinking it and I just spend too much effort on this shit. In fact I’m quite sure that’s the case.

Okay, enough geek speak. Back to the music.

* A bridge track is what Jay and myself (and other DJs, I’d suspect) call one of those last few songs you need when creating a set. This track needs to serve as a “bridge” between one finished block of your mix and another. You can be 95% done with the set, but find yourself stuck trying to find that last song that will bring you from the start to the finish. If you’re astute you can sometimes tell which track in DJ’s set is a bridge track because it may be short and drum-focused (making it easy to mix), or the mixes on either end of that song may not be as smooth as the rest, just there to get the job done. I’ll leave you to guess which track is the bridge in this mix.

It didn’t start out this way, but somehow as I was pulling this set together this set morphed into the hardest thing I’ve ever recorded. This probably means it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but likewise I’m sure some of you will like it more than my usual lighter/funkier fare. This doesn’t need to be said, but like most electronic music, this sounds better LOUD. So turn it up… I dropped some extra F-bombs in there so you’ll be sure to offend some people.

Okay, so here’s what happened. I spun a set I was quite pleased with at my friends’ club night (Freeform Vs Dubalicious - if you’re in San Francisco you need to check it out.) The mixes were solid, the styles were varied, and everyone seemed to like it. Luckily, I had recorded the set on a borrow mp3 recorder with the hopes of using it as a new promo. When I got home I discovered that my inexperience with the recorder caused me to set the input level so low that it was unusable. Rather than give it up, I used the opportunity to teach myself Ableton (a music sequencing program, ie. not live) and what you have below is the result. I still really like the set, but Ableton sets always lack the roughness, the imperfections of a live set. While I certainly enjoy the control, there’s a certain human element that’s lost. And now that I’ve totally talked it down, here it is. Enjoy!

It’s Friday, which means you can count on the Beatery for another set of booty-shakin’ beats to kick start your weekend. For this week’s retro set I have an old live set of mine from almost three years ago. This is the second in the Standford Sessions series*, recorded on the Big Love show on KZSU 90.1, Stanford radio. Despite the roughness of the set (it’s the radio, I was a bit nervous) this is a great one, working it’s way from kitschy electro house to progressive breaks at the very end. I still really dig the mix of Put your Hands Up for Detroit and White Horse at the beginning… wish I hadn’t smeared my way into that one. You two diehard DJ Cor fans out there may note a lot of similarities between this and No Excuses, which I recorded a few months later. Sue me, tracks cost eleven bucks back then and I was working at startup. **

Hey, speaking of Stanford Sessions, you know who also has a sweet backlog of radio mixes? Our own Beatery resident, Mr. Matt Haegen. I bet if you ask real nice he’ll put them up. It was a funkier time, back in ’05. The Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors and Krafty Kuts (all represented in this mix) had yet to transition from their funky breaks roots into the nu-skool and booty breaks repertoire for which they are known today. And while I do dig the harder, dirtier styles those artists are rockin these days, and while there’s no doubt the funk is still  alive and well in their more recent works, there’s something about this older stuff… it’s a purer form of funk. Closer to Parliament, George Clinton and the Gap Band than the funky breaks you hear today.

Jay and I each recorded a forty minute mini-set as a handout for what was probably the biggest party/fundraiser we’ve ever thrown: Fatbeats Diner. Check out that line-up in the picture above. That was an San Francisco DJ dream team for Jay and me. I suppose this party was also the origin of the extended food/music metaphor you see resurrected in this blog. I’m sure Jay will have more to say about the party itself when he posts his half of the set, but for now, enjoy this starter: a well-balanced serving of funky house and breaks… the kind they used to make.

DJ Cor - Rhythmic Trip (2003)

It’s Friday, which means it’s time for another “retro” set. Today’s is another one of my own: Rhythmic Trip from 2003… which I believe marks my first and only use of the cliché ‘music-as-journey’ metaphor. This was also my first venture into “nu skool breaks” territory, though to be honest it really doesn’t venture too far. I’ve never been able to take those aggressive wobbling basslines for 70 minutes straight. Anyhow, it has all the basic trademarks of any of my old sets…

- A few mixes I’m still proud of. (The first two.)

DJ Cor - War of the Worlds (2002)

In honor of our favorite holiday, Jay and I are taking a break from the newly-recorded podcasts to bring you a couple of Halloween-themed flashbacks. This is a bit of a departure from our standard operating procedure… up until now the podcasts have been the realm of new mixes, hot off the decks (or more accurately, the laptop hard drives.) Let us know what you think. If you desire only new music in these bi-weekly podcasts, leave us a comments saying so and we’re likely to meet those demands… we aim to please. However, if you’re content with the occasional pod-blast from the past, we just may do a few more of these in the future.

So today we have a set that I’d guess most of our regular listeners are familiar with. I’ve never had such a great reception for one of my mixes as this one right here. Some day, far in the future when I’ve spun my last set, I’ll look back on my archive of mixes and most likely conclude that War of the Worlds was my high-water mark. It’s a pretty well-executed concept mix, and I’ve been trying ever since to come up with another one like it but I have yet to find source material with the same potential. If anyone has any brilliant ideas, I’m all ears.

This mix was born when I was trying to find a way to fill the brutally long gap in the instrumental mix of Timo Maas’, Help Me. Around the same time, I was attempting to learn to scratch with an old record of the original ‘War of the Worlds’ radio drama (mission failed, by the way.) The Timo Maas song uses the theme from ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ so it already had that old sci-fi vibe, and hence the record samples were a perfect fit. I was so excited by the sound of it I spent several weeks fleshing it out to a whole mix, selecting and editing the voice samples and pulling together music that best fit the mood (and some that didn’t, let’s be honest.) The result is what you have here, and despite the outdated music and loose mixing, it’s still the set I’m most proud of, and still the one I’m trying to beat.

Time to take a trip down memory lane. Breakthru marks my first foray into the new and exciting world of breakbeat, not to mention my first use of the requisite “breaks” pun.* There are some absolute classics in this one… some early Plump DJs, Timo Maas, Bassbin Twins, Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, Fatboy Slim, the Plumps, Electroliners, and a think there are a few Plump DJs tracks in there as well. On second thought, I don’t know whether the fact that I’m still spinning several of these tracks today means they are absolute classics, or indicates that I really haven’t grown much as a DJ in the last 8 years. Maybe it’s both.
