For lack of a better theme for a post, here’s a few guilty pleasure dance covers that I like.   But I only admit to this thanks to the cover of internet anonymity.

Toxic by Brittany Spears ~ remixed by Society Suckers

China Girl by David Bowie ~ remixed by Moogue

Another Dimension by The Beastie Boys ~ reimagined by Timmy Vegas & Bad Lay-Dee

Plug In Baby by Muse ~ remixed by Rackit

What are YOURS! Don’t pretend like you don’t have any - you’re better than that.  Well, some of you anyway.

VNV Nation

EBM, Electro-Industrial, Futurepop1 Comment

In light of the recent kerfuffle over vocals in trance music, I thought that I’d make a post about the only trancesque genre where I consider it acceptable, and that is Futurepop.  Futurepop is an offshoot of Electro-Industrial which in turn, is an offshoot of EBM (Electronic Body Music) and on and on.

One of the best bands to represent Futurepop is VNV Nation, seeing as how they coined the term, and because they’re awesome.  They’ve released eight albums and record about an equal amount of instrumental songs as songs with vocals.  Here are some highlights:

Vocal:

Beloved

Chrome

Genesis

Honour

Instrumental:

Radius²

Strata

So what do the trance fans think?

Some Hep-Step for your Electro-Swing

moonglow

Cor’s post made me want to post this one song, as it is in the same realm of  ”swing samples in electronic music.”  It’s Moonglow by Venetian Snares.  I wish that he would do a whole jazz-sampled album, but no.

Starscream - Future, Towards the Edge of Forever

Chip Tunes, Nintendocore, TrendsNo Comments

I think that De La Soul were wrong, because the magic number is clearly “two.”  I guess three worked for them, but when you’re talking about E(D)M groups, there are just so many great examples of two.  I mean Plaid, BoC, Daft Punk, Modeselektor, Autechre…. Anyway.

I’m not a chiptune aficionado, by any means, and frankly, most of the stuff that I’ve heard is not very impressive. It usually sounds like old Nintendo music, instead of music composed using MIDI synths.  These guys use a Commodore 64 with layered guitar, bass and piano.  It’s fantastic.  It is also rare that I like an entire album these days, of any genre.  Since I bought their album, I’ve played it about eight times all the way through.  I bought it yesterday.

Here are a few examples:

Mira, Ultraviolet

Galeforce

Moonrunner

Pistachio & Anonymous - A Red Tape

Classic Mixtapes4 Comments

Well since it appears that I’m the only one NOT on vacation, I’m gonna take it upon myself to post an old mix tape that I found.  It’s Pistachio vs Anonymous, and the tape is red.  That’s all I can tell you.  P & A were a couple of random trance DJs here in SF at one point.   I think that I saw them once at an F-8 party in Oakland, like, 10 years ago or so.

And no, that ISN’T their logo.  It just happens to be the greatest possible match from a Google images search ever.
