Yeehaw…how y’all doin…er ahem. Actually people in Austin don’t all, or even mostly talk like that. I just got back from a week there, and it’s truly an oasis in the middle of a state that might otherwise meet those expectations.
Which is probably why Austin has such a killer (and widely known) music scene.
This place has got a lot to offer, whether it be Rock, Indy, Alt, or even EDM, all of which can be perused in a casual walk down Sixth Street downtown.
So this month, I present to you the latest in fresh squeezed progressive and trance cuts, which will take you from the sweltering daytime heat to the sultry swingin of a nighttime rooftop bar, all with your trusty margarita in hand.
Wow, last weekend was awesome. I played a community campout called Frolic up in Willits, CA and it was complete epicness. Amazing vibe, amazing people, and amazing LAZERS provided by SF crew Heroic Robot. Man what a ride. Nothing like DJing in the fog and mist outdoors under the wide open sky.
That set is already up online, but one thing about loving music and DJing is you never get to play all the tunes you want to (unless of course you preplan live sets - lame!). So there are a number of tracks that didn’t fit, or weren’t in my key range, etc etc that I would have loved to have played as well.
I’ve put a few of those together for this week’s Friday 5 podcast set. You may recognize some of them, including the boshing mashup I posted about a bit back, along with a remix of one of my latest tunes! Altogether, a fun ride through some banging housey trance!
1. Gareth Emery vs Alex Speaker - Exposure (Ben Nickey Mashup)
2. Duderstadt ft. Hannah Ray - Painted Red
3. Derek Ryan - Catharsis (SNR Remix)
4. Jan Johnston and Tenishia - Flesh (Rework)
5. Dan Viaz - Cycling Universe
before he was professor x, he was charles…before he was magneto, he was….
…oh oops, wrong movie.
So back in the day, I used to DJ under a different name - the incredibly hard to read “fr33st4t3“.
yup, leet. read “freestate”, and yeah I actually did start using it before the mau5 took leet spelling into the mainstream.
I used this alias from when I started out playing deep house (!), and it took me from there to classic prog, breaks, trance, and back to prog again…
Perhaps a bit of nostalgia has hit me, as I’ve dug up a mix from that time that’s got some serious tunage…some of these tracks are old faves of mine.
A bit different than the sheen and hyped production of modern tracks, but they definitely pump.
See what you think for a ride with a different sound…we go through waves of prog, trance and even some boshed UP breaks tunes in here…
So spring is almost upon us here, and one thing that happens in spring is that everyone from the dance music scene all over the world flocks to Miami for some of the biggest gatherings in the industry. Although the Miami Winter Music Conference (WMC) is nearly a household name, what people really go for is all the industry parties that happen around the conference, leading up to the massive Ultra Music Festival on the weekend. This year, the Conference itself has moved, but all of those parties (at least the ones that matter!) are taking place in their normal slots next next week.
I’ll be heading out there for the events - and will be playing at Ultra!! Come find me in the Eco Village on Saturday March 26th if you’re there…I’m excited - this is the biggest EDM event in North America!
But anyways, about Miami - man, it’s almost cliche to say this, but Miami Beach is actually pretty magical.
I wanted to dislike it, I really did, but it’s something else.
The spit of land that’s separated by the harbor from the mainland is goregeous, with MILES of beach as far as the eye can see punctuated by skyscraping hotels and sweeping oceanic landscapes is gorgeous, and one of the coolest experiences ever is to drive along the highway between South Beach and the northern section, throw on some sexy tunes, and just groove.
I’ve found that some lush progressive house does this job like no other - so my latest mini mix this time around is created out of that vibe. Put on some shades, sunscreen, and put one of those little umbrellas in your hair, then pop it on and flow!
Brr. After some sun and temperate strangeness it’s back to being cold in Japan, and snowing in a great many parts of the country - and nowhere more than Akita, up a bit north from Tokyo. The snow falls pretty heavy on this prefecture where the onsen are warm, and women are hot, and the drinks are strong - especially the sake.
Akita is known for some of the finest flavors in the sake world, so keep that in mind as we bring you some warming winter palate pleasers in the form of beat driven fun on this latest five-on-friday format mini mix.
Check out some exquisite flavors from what’s new out there in the progressive/trance world–
