DJ Haegen - Friday Five: Drumstep Edition

Drumstep. Yeah, its a thing.

Guess it’s about time for a new “-step” to emerge. If you haven’t heard the rumblings, Drumstep is to Drum N Bass what Dubstep is to Breaks - heavy and half-time. Drumstep is enough of a production style that it has registered on the Beatport charts as a theme, and it’s listed on Wikipedia as a subgenre of Drum n’ bass, but it’s hard to know whether it is unique enough to take hold and grow into a defined style. While Dubstep’s 65-70bpm plod felt at least sort of original (if not obnoxiously so to some), Drumstep hovers higher in the 85-95bpm range, which puts it a lot closer to Hip-Hop in head nod-ability.

I decided to explore it a bit to make up my own mind, and the result is this here podcast. Even though at the moment a lot of Drumstep tracks sound to me like good ol’ DnB songs that got stuck in a breakdown, we do love our labels here in EDM-land so we might as well just stop quibbling over names and enjoy bangin’ tracks right?

Right.

You guys! It’s podcast time.

Last Saturday I got to throw down with the Future Universal crew at one of San Francisco’s most notorious parties, the Burner-founded, mash-up extravaganza known as Bootie! It’s easy to sneer at the party as a bridge-and-tunnel cheap-thrill extravaganza but you can’t deny the vibe they create. Somehow they manage to do three Saturdays a MONTH and every weekend (including last) there was STILL a line around the corner at 1:45am! Say what you will about the attendees, but any DJ or promoter would kill for a crowd as psyched as that. Plus, while haters hate, a bunch of sweaty dancers are having way more fun anyway.

So! They also have a rotating side room and it was here that FUSF was allowed to steer the night towards clubland. This week’s podcast is my set from that night. It was performed with Traktor Pro, a midi controller, and the club’s mixer, so the levels are a bit rough here and there but in general it was probably the most fun I have ever had rocking a party. Just fyi: the volume cuts during This Is How We Do It were so the crowd could sing along, and sing they did! To recreate the effect, the lyrics are:

“This is how we do it!”

Hey everyone, welcome to yet another Podcast Friday here on The Beatery! This week happens to be my chance to share with y’all and I am going to take this opportunity to exercise some lingering musical ghosts that have been haunting my psyche for a while now.

For as much music as it must seem like a DJ goes through on a daily/weekly/monthly basis, there are often as many tracks that fall by the wayside as there are those that make in into the crate. When it came time for me to plan a new mix, I decided that there were a number of tracks that I really liked but for whatever reason never got the love they deserved. So, before retiring them, I figured I’d finally give them a chance to shine.

Just about every track in this mix has been in my library for a long time but never really played much (or at all), just sat on for a long time for no real good reason. They all are going into “storage” once this is published as I start to look beyond 2010 and to the future of new music, but I am very happy to be sending them off in style!
