Here in San Francisco, where a typical August day can reach temperatures of nearly 62 degrees, we sometimes need to be reminded that in other parts of the northern hemisphere people are experiencing a phenomenon known as “summer.” Luckily, Canadian producer Neighbor is here with a two-pack of fun, sunny tracks in his Summertime EP.

Summer Girls is a little funky number that threatens to embed itself in your head and not leave until October. “Cute” isn’t an adjective one usually applies to house music, but that plucky melodic hook and the relative smallness of the production give the track a rather adorable quality.

And if light, quirky house isn’t your thing, Summer Holiday turns things up a few notches with a heavier bass and party rap vocal, while still keeping things nice and funky. Great one for the dance floor.

Greets, and welcome to August!
We’re knee deep in summer, but yet it’s still cloudy round here…ah the Bay Area.

So, today is a pretty fantastic day - I’m excited to announce that my latest single Catharsis is out on general release!
Some of you may have seen this go by when it was on Audiojelly exclusive, but today it’s out to all the usual portal suspects.

For the original - I went for a pretty progressive feel on this one, with a punchy bassline set agains melodic-stab-waves and a super processed piano part. Still keeps the trance with a big breakdown and build to a chorded melody, but still eschews the obnoxious super upfrontness. I played this out at the campout last weekend and was quite happy with it!

The remixes both take it in a deeper direction, with SNR putting some serious fire in his worming, squirming bassline (and it hits hard after the break!), and Danny Chen giving extra atmosphere, soundcape, and a chugging groove. Both are great for a housier floor, as tested this with SNR’s last weekend at Helix .progression…SNR got hands in the air and cheers; mighty fine work.

So woohoo! Another release out!

Once again I was up way too late last night, randomly strolling around the internet, window shopping for beats and popping in on old friends. This deft avoidance of sleep was thoroughly rewarded when I happened upon these last two releases from Colorado’s finest, Pretty Lights. I’ve always been a passing admirer of his genre defying glitched-out-funky-bass-step*, but it seems I may have to become an all out fan. With his “Summertime” mashup and “Country Roads”** remix Pretty Lights has officially reached Next Level status at Casa de Jay.

* No, this is not an official EDM sub-genre. But it SHOULD be.

** The greatest Country & Western song of all time. Or at least my favorite. Wait, those AREN’T the same things?? How dare you.

Quick hit this morning. Sixteen year-old phenom Madeon shows us how you do a fucking mashup. Thirty-nine tracks, and it doesn’t sound like a complete trainwreck. In fact, it sounds pretty damn incredible. Girl Talk, take notes.
