Happy Friday everyone! I was just doing my usual Soundcloud meander when I stumbled across this incredible mix that I HAD to share with you, stat! DJ/producer Bombastic Jam* has been started a podcast, and while I haven’t heard a single other episode I have no doubt that none are better than this one. We’ve got breaks of all kinds, old school funky, swing inspired, latin, mid tempo groove, and even some vintage Jungle/D&B!!

* His soundcould page says he’s from Hambug, Germany, but that accent’s gotta be Irish, right??

It’s a Radio show more than a DJ mix so don’t expect to be blown away by the mixing, but the tracks are all top notch, the beats varied and the vibe perfect for summer up here in the Global North. Plus there’s a bonus mix from fellow funky breaks master Jay L Funk starting around the one hour mark; Enjoy!

Endless Summer of Funk

Summer is winding down for us here in the Northern Hemisphere, but we still have a bit more juice left in our long-ish days and nice-ish weather. To help you get the most out what’s left of your summer here are two fantastic, recently released funky mixes that will hopefully inspire you to have one last BBQ, go to one last beach or catch on last ball game.

Enjoy it while you can!

Fort Knox Five - “Endless Summer”

This is an awesome mid-temp funky set that *gasp* actually lets all the great songs play instead of mixing out after 30 seconds! This has become my favorite Fort Knox mix of all time and has to be a top five of 2011.

DJ Dan - “Stereo Damage Ep. 14″

The incomparable Funky/Electro House master is back with fantastic of blend of new grooves and fun, bouncy tracks. Now why ohhhhh why did he not play a set like this at Burning Man this year?? For those who didn’t witness it his Friday night Opulent Temple set was uninspired techy nonsense.

“50 told me: go ‘head, switch the style up and if they hate then let ‘em hate and watch the money pile up” - Kanye West

With Kanye West and 50 Cent proudly looking on, it gives me great pleasure to officially “switch my style up”. I’m breaking my DJ/production personality in two: Austin Gregory plays progressive house and trance. Period. Check him out, he’s awesome. Hella Beats, though, is not restrained by genre labels.

Under my new DJ persona I am freed to play whatever new hotness catches my ear: uptempo or mid; broken beats or fixed; grimy or pristine; house, breaks, funk, wobble, Hip Hop, dubstep (yeah, I said it) or moombahton; it’s all on the table. Which brings us to this set right here.

The new sounds catching my ear of late are: nu-funk, mid-tempo wobble, Ghetto Breaks and moombahton. Don’t even trip if you haven’t heard of these, we’re talking micro EDM sub genres here. What’s important is that they all go about 100-110 BPM and get heads bobbing, booties shaking and bodies grinding.

I am totally drinking this mid-tempo Kool Aid and I invite you to try a glass. It’s refreshing, cool, and ohh so funky in the best of ways! Drink up!

Funk Ferret

Over the past few months, I’ve noticed the same ridiculous name popping up time and time again on my mid-tempo funky breaks shopping list, which means it’s probably time that one Funk Ferret get his due propers here on the Beatery. This dude is the shit. Not much more to say than point out the fact that he has a knack for taking classic old school rhymes and throwing them over thick funky basslines. In fact, the thick funky baseline in the first track below comes from one of my favorite movie soundtracks. I’ve got a free prize for the first person to name it.*

*Offer void in Tennessee, and for Jay and Cara who I know have the soundtrack in question.

Four For July - BBQ Soundtracks

Well, the warm weather is finally upon us (pay no attention to those bouts of rainfall we’re still experiencing here in the bay area) and with it comes those summer tunes. Successful summer electronic music is upbeat, fun, immediately accessible to the casual listener… none of that subtle, brooding proggy stuff. This is my wheelhouse, and I had hoped to have a new mix for you all today, but unfortunately due to a number of family and work obligations I haven’t yet had the free time to lay down the set I’ve got in mind. So, a consolation prize, or arguably a much better substitution: a slew of fun summertime mixes from some of my favorite funky breaks DJs. All can be downloaded by clicking on the little arrow on the right side of the player. Crank ‘em up, light that Coleman, and please don’t forget the sunscreen.

One note: I apologize for the sheer number of times you’ll hear A Skillz’ ‘California Soul’ remix if you listen to these sets back to back. It appears the track is your official summer breaks jam, and yep, it’s already getting played out.
