Neighbor - Summertime EP

Here in San Francisco, where a typical August day can reach temperatures of nearly 62 degrees, we sometimes need to be reminded that in other parts of the northern hemisphere people are experiencing a phenomenon known as “summer.” Luckily, Canadian producer Neighbor is here with a two-pack of fun, sunny tracks in his Summertime EP.

Summer Girls is a little funky number that threatens to embed itself in your head and not leave until October. “Cute” isn’t an adjective one usually applies to house music, but that plucky melodic hook and the relative smallness of the production give the track a rather adorable quality.

And if light, quirky house isn’t your thing, Summer Holiday turns things up a few notches with a heavier bass and party rap vocal, while still keeping things nice and funky. Great one for the dance floor.

Both tracks, plus a dub mix of the latter, can be purchased from Juno Download.

This week we’ve got a guest mix from multitalented SF local Reza Ebrahimi, better known to the musical world as DIRTYHERTZ. In addition to his crazy rad production and engineering skills, he’s also a killer DJ, so we’re stoked to have a mix from him!. Here’s what he has to say:

This mix is more on my POP side. I love vocals as long as it doesn’t sound cheesy. It brings the human element into the track and it communicates in a different way since its a language we all speak and undrestand.

The selection here are tracks that I have been playing for the last few years and don’t seem to be getting tiered of them. I would like to share many more with you but POP2 on its way.

Enjoy

Maya Jane Coles

Hot Tip Alert!

An old buddy of mine (and past Beatery podcaster Jon Barnes) tipped me off last week to a new shooting star in the Deep/Tech House scene, miss Maya Jane Coles. The 23 year old Londoner has been dropping a steady stream of deep, quality singles on labels like Real Tone, Crosstown Rebels, and Mobilee (one of my favorite go-to’s during my minimal days). She’s got a groovy style with muted basses and melodies that creep and bloom slowly throughout. Deep house is usually a tough sell for me, as I often find it either boring or cheesy, but MJC manages to find a good middle ground here, and I am really digging this stuff.

She’s touring right now, so check her out!

DJ Cor - Cardio Disco (2001)

Well we’ve sure had our share of podcasts recently; all four weeks in November served up a five song demi-podcast from each of our residents. So, this being the first Friday after a gluttonous Thanksgiving break, I thought it might be time to go back to a classic to help us shed some of those excess holiday pounds. Cardio Disco is a workout mix I made back in my house music days. It’s a consistent 133 bpm, exactly one hour long, and filled with surefire crowd-pleasers: Blondie, Deee-Lite, Talking Heads, even Abba. The idea, of course, was that it’d be perfect for a run or a trip to the gym… circa 2001. It sounds pretty dated now, but I’m sure some of you more active Beatery listeners out there can put it to good use. Now get moving!

And don’t forget, tickets for our New Year’s Ball are now on sale. Get ‘em while they’re nice and cheap! Make no mistake, this WILL be the party of the year!

Editor’s note: this is the third in our “So You Think You Can BUMP!? 2010″ series, in which we count down the present our fav producers of the year and let you make the call on who’s the best. Check out all the nominees here!

Leon Bolier is already a legend in the scene.
As one of the leaders of the new breed of trance, it’s nearly impossible to speak of the state of modern trance/progressive without this guy’s name coming up. And unsurprisingly, he’s Dutch ^_^.

Known for his genre-bending techy grooves, he’s also classically trained (can play the keys like a mofo) and has a killer ability to pair gripping melodies and progressions with some seriously fierce firepower.

Let’s see what he can throw our way…
