Hot Tip Alert!

An old buddy of mine (and past Beatery podcaster Jon Barnes) tipped me off last week to a new shooting star in the Deep/Tech House scene, miss Maya Jane Coles. The 23 year old Londoner has been dropping a steady stream of deep, quality singles on labels like Real Tone, Crosstown Rebels, and Mobilee (one of my favorite go-to’s during my minimal days). She’s got a groovy style with muted basses and melodies that creep and bloom slowly throughout. Deep house is usually a tough sell for me, as I often find it either boring or cheesy, but MJC manages to find a good middle ground here, and I am really digging this stuff.

She’s touring right now, so check her out!

SYTYCB 2010 - deadmau5

Well, look at this!  We’ve come to the final installment of “So You Think You Can BUMP!? 2010″, our contest of nominating the top electronic music producers of the past year.  If you’ve missed a few or need a review go here for all the nominees and a breakdown of the contest.  Voting will start next week!

The man in the mouse mask crashed down onto the the electronic dance music (edm) landscape in the mid ’00s like that comet that killed off the dinosaurs. Deadmau5 quickly became the hottest name in edm by releasing a tirade of banging tracks that filled that missing spaces between electro, progressive and trance; and perhaps most impressively with just three years of work he still managed to win  fifth place in our original SYTYCB contest that counted down the top producers of the decade.

But hype, fame and the grand stage are often followed by imitation, staleness and complacency.  Did Joel Zimmerman mange to evolve his sound in 2010 to stay ahead of the competition?  You can be the judge after the jump, but first a quick pop quiz:

The number one complaint I always hear about deadmau5 is that all his tracks sound the same.  But is this really true?  Below are five snippets of tracks that came out in 2010.  Can you pick out which one(s) are by deadmau5 and which one(s) are not?

Track B

Track C

Track D

Track E

SYTYCB - Afrojack

Dutch DJ and producer Afrojack has been straight killing it in 2010! He’s released, remixed, and been remixed a ton of tracks in the last 12 months, and that’s not just churn either. He’s done work with some really high profile names like Spencer & Hill, David Guetta, Larry Tee and Benni Benassi, and even what is arguably the year’s hottest debut, Duck Sauce, and all of that while keeping up an epic, globe-trotting tour schedule.

You might be wondering, “how could he possibly top a remix of one of the biggest tracks of 2010? Why, by appearing TWICE in mixes on The Beatery of course! He managed to sneak in completely organically (they are both mine), based solely on merit. I didn’t even realize I’d done that until regrouping to write this post. To me, that is a screaming indicator of a great producer. Each time I dig through my crate, they are given a chance to make their case, and repeated selection means constant quality.

Get ready for some squelchin’.

Editor’s note: this is the third in our “So You Think You Can BUMP!? 2010″ series, in which we count down the present our fav producers of the year and let you make the call on who’s the best. Check out all the nominees here!

Leon Bolier is already a legend in the scene.
As one of the leaders of the new breed of trance, it’s nearly impossible to speak of the state of modern trance/progressive without this guy’s name coming up. And unsurprisingly, he’s Dutch ^_^.

Known for his genre-bending techy grooves, he’s also classically trained (can play the keys like a mofo) and has a killer ability to pair gripping melodies and progressions with some seriously fierce firepower.

Let’s see what he can throw our way…

Back in the day I used to got raves all the time and dance my ass of to these glorious sets of cybertrance music. After every one I hoped and prayed that it was being recorded so I could take that feeling with, just have the ability to re-capture that vibe whenever I wanted. But of course they never were recorded. Or if they were the DJ never bothered to mater it, make it into a tape and release to the general public. And eventually I got used to the idea that these awesome seta of music were just one time, transitory events to be enjoyed in the moment, but not able to be captured, stored, and re-created on demand.

Well, I am sooo happy to share with you one shining exception. As I mentioned in my last podcast this year DJ Dan played the best set I’ve ever heard on the playa, burn night, 12 am at Root Society’s ginormous wall of light and sound (aka Tower of Babel). Instead of being lost the the fading recesses of our collective memories we can now re-live every pounding beat of this fantastic set as DJ Dan just released it as a podcast! Hark! the Herald Angels sings! Hallelujah!!

While it does sound a bit strange coming out of computer speakers instead of three story tower of sound, I can still fell the energy of Burning Man seeping through… and the dust. Enjoy!
