Tell your boss we’re sorry, because this is pretty much guaranteed to ruin your productivity today. Turntable.fm, a new music site finally brings the “social” element to online music streaming in a simple and addictive way. Think of it like Pandora controlled by your friends, or chat rooms with music, or perhaps a lower tech comparison: it’s like everyone at a party taking turns on the stereo. All you need to know is that it’s awesome.
It’s easier to jump in and try than describe, but let me try: You start by creating or joining a room (pictured above) populated by cutesy avatars. Each room features a dancefloor and a stage with up to five DJ spots. Take a spot on stage to begin queuing up songs for the room, either by searching the internet or uploading them from your computer. Your music gets streamed to everyone in the room, and your audience can vote on the track, or discuss it in the chat room. If you have multiple DJs, it cycles through each person song by song. And that’s it! The beauty is in its simplicity.
The site is obviously still in its beta stage. The connection can be a bit spotty, the time between tracks will test your patience, and you’ll often miss the first ten seconds of your song, but the core idea is so appealing you’ll quickly forgive all of that. Enough reading, JUMP IN. There’s a Beatery room already, so stop wasting time and get in here!
Turntable.fm: The Beatery Room
UPDATE: I should have mentioned, if it’s your first time on turntable.fm, the above link won’t work the first time. You’ll need to create an account (connecting through facebook is painless) then once you’re in, come back and hit the link again to get to the Beatery room.
UPDATE 2: There is nary a soul in the Beatery’s room, so you’ll definitely have more luck browsing the other public rooms…
