In honor of our favorite holiday, Jay and I are taking a break from the newly-recorded podcasts to bring you a couple of Halloween-themed flashbacks. This is a bit of a departure from our standard operating procedure… up until now the podcasts have been the realm of new mixes, hot off the decks (or more accurately, the laptop hard drives.) Let us know what you think. If you desire only new music in these bi-weekly podcasts, leave us a comments saying so and we’re likely to meet those demands… we aim to please. However, if you’re content with the occasional pod-blast from the past, we just may do a few more of these in the future.

So today we have a set that I’d guess most of our regular listeners are familiar with. I’ve never had such a great reception for one of my mixes as this one right here. Some day, far in the future when I’ve spun my last set, I’ll look back on my archive of mixes and most likely conclude that War of the Worlds was my high-water mark. It’s a pretty well-executed concept mix, and I’ve been trying ever since to come up with another one like it but I have yet to find source material with the same potential. If anyone has any brilliant ideas, I’m all ears.

This mix was born when I was trying to find a way to fill the brutally long gap in the instrumental mix of Timo Maas’, Help Me. Around the same time, I was attempting to learn to scratch with an old record of the original ‘War of the Worlds’ radio drama (mission failed, by the way.) The Timo Maas song uses the theme from ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ so it already had that old sci-fi vibe, and hence the record samples were a perfect fit. I was so excited by the sound of it I spent several weeks fleshing it out to a whole mix, selecting and editing the voice samples and pulling together music that best fit the mood (and some that didn’t, let’s be honest.) The result is what you have here, and despite the outdated music and loose mixing, it’s still the set I’m most proud of, and still the one I’m trying to beat.

this is still pretty much my favorite DJ Cor mix ever. it never seems to age, even though i know the tracks are long out of vogue. i think it’s the awesome mixing and expert layering of samples from the war of the worlds radio recording that have made it so timeless. when i hear these songs played alone, they sound naked. that’s how you know when a DJ’s done his job. nice work, Cor!

Lets do a little SAT prep…
War of the Worlds is to DJ Cor’s as
    Homework is to Daft Punk
(aka the greatest release by said artist thus far)

(Do you know they don’t even do these anymore in the SATs I hear!?)

Oh wow! I like Requiem mixed in there. I never would have thought to correlate it with Sci-fi or Halloween but it really is such an emotionally provocative sound. Great work, thank you!

This mix was my introduction to Cor’s work, and of course I agree on the grade of “excellent.” I think the reason that it sounds so good is that he worked SO HARD on it! There were clearly a lot of late nights looking for that “perfect song” and “perfect sample”. There may be a few niggles here and there, but nothing that I notice in casual listening. Sounds good LOUD too!

BUT, I won’t dare suggest that this mix can’t - or hasn’t already - been outdone by Cor. He’s been building/playing/releasing other *different* sets for years, and I love most of them! Thanks Cor!
