DJ Ghost - Acid Breaks (1996)

Acid Breaks, Breaks, Classic Mixtapes

Ahhhh… I like that. I credit my wife for bringing this mixtape into the relationship; it was a permanent fixture in her car stereo when we first started dating. I also credit this tape for being my introduction to wonderful world of breakbeat (unless you count James Brown, Afrika Bambaataa or other precursors to the modern breaks genre.) It’s crazy to me how different these tracks sound than the aggressive, bass-dominated breaks of today… these beats are looser, the production is thinner, and a simple modulating 303 synth can carry an entire song. Here’s to old skool breaks!

We were at a rave in 1996 at Home Base in Oakland when DJ Ghost was handing these out to everyone right in front of the turntables. We grabbed a few and listened to them pretty much every day that whole year. Time went on and these tapes got lost. I contacted DJ Ghost a few years ago to see if he had the original masters, but said they were locked up in his house somewhere. This is a blast from the past and a time in my life I’ll never forget.

This is definitive electro break beat madness from the mid 90’s when the scene was unstoppable. Thank you Josh for uploading this. All I have is a shitty tape copy. Lost the CD with my mind back in the day!!!

great to hear the love from a few ravers after my own heart! this was one of the first mixtapes i acquired when i jumped into the scene in 1997. it was well-loved and rarely left my car stereo until i ditched the tape deck in the late 90s. naturally, i made cor transfer it to CD as soon as he was able. this mix may be almost 15 years old, but the venerable dj ghost can still get my ass shaking!!
