Happy Kid Marty - Til You Just Can’t Boogie No Mo’ (1998)

Classic Mixtapes, DJ Sets, House

hkmboogie

While I believe my first true exposure to house music was courtesy of DJ Dan, this tape showed me that electronic music can be fun and silly. A Stevie Wonder remix, some Quincy Jones, lisping voice samples, hell, even howling dogs; the tracks Marty selected for this one are quirky, funny, campy… they just put a smile on your face. It’s a solid dose of ridiculousness for a scene that could stand to take itself a little less seriously.

I’m sorry I don’t have a better copy to record. I would venture a guess that my copy of this tape was eaten by more than one car stereo, and it sounds like it. If you can torque it through the first and last bits of each side, the rest does get better. My apologies. If I manage to find a better copy, I’ll replace it.

  1. [...] in the cassette sleeve for this mix (which I’ve long since lost) Marty said that if the red tape was his soul, this tape was his heart. Even without that explanation, it’s easy to hear that [...]

Wow I am so stoked that you have these. I don’t have files of the red one at all. I actually have one cassette tape of each left, but haven’t had much success finding a decent cassette tape player to record and convert to a digital file.
This is so cool! You rock so hard for having this.
And you’re absolutely right about me not having mixed or released more. It kinda was a shame. I poured a lot into these mixes, but then for some years lost sight of my creative spirit, (or spirit in general for that matter)Starting to change that now, although i’m not so sure it will come in the form of dj-mixes…we’ll see.
Well, anyhow. Thx so much for these. Downloading them now. Am grateful to be reminded that once upon a time I had a positive effect on people through music. Peace.

Marty! It’s great to see you here. You we definitely an influence on me during my first formative years spinning house music. We started posting these old mixtapes as both a nostalgic trip back to our raving days, and to share them with anyone who had loved and lost them. I never suspected that group might include their original creators. Glad to see they’ve found their way back to you… I’m sorry to say that I played them so much back in the day that they were pretty chewed up by the time I got around to digitizing them. If you have any more of your old mixtapes that you’d like to convert, send me an email (cor@thebeatery.com), I keep my old tape deck plugged into my computer for just this purpose, and I’d love to get more of your mixes for the site.

Good to hear you’re getting your groove back. If you have anything to share, music or otherwise, please drop in on us here and let us know.

    Peace!

Wow, great to hear from you Marty! Not really much to say that Cor didn’t already share, but I do want to re-emphasize how awesome and inspirational these tapes were in my DJing career (hahahah, “career” like I’m some famous DJ or something ;) They really showed me that there could be synergy to a set, that a well contrived mix could be more that the sum of it’s parts, that you really can set a mood and convey emotion. Thanks for all the work you put in to these back in the day!

If you ever do decide to get back into DJing we’d love to have you do a guest podcast sometime. Just let us know. Good luck with everything!
