Mystre - Natural Mystic (1998)

Classic Mixtapes, Cybertrance, DJ Sets, Melodic Trance, Trance

f8logo

Starting a retrospective of Mystre’s tapes with Natural Mystic is a bit like starting a Star Wars marathon with Empire Strikes Back… Sure, there are some other great ones in the series, but it’s never going to get this good again. But what can I say, I wanted to break out the good stuff early. I couldn’t wait to hear it again.

This tape was on repeat in my Walkman for pretty much the entirety of my freshman year in college which is when I started DJing (I guess I’m dating myself here.) It’s one of those albums I used as my introduction to a new genre, and consequently I own about half the records on the tape. I love the harder songs on side one, the tribal-trance at the beginning of side two, and the last track, “Words” by Paul Van Dyk, was my favorite song in world for a few months there. I only digitized one of the tracks for our Bonus Beats section, but if anyone out there wants more, comment below with the track you’re looking for… there’s a good chance I have it lying around somewhere.

BONUS BEAT:
Whoosh - Whoosh (Baby Doc Remix) (Second track on side 1)

Oh, and if you like this set so much that you want it on CD, I’m sure F8 would appreciate it if you bought a copy HERE.

I clicked on this to listen to it a bit, as I hadn’t heard it years, but goddamn. I had to play the whole thing, even though I know it by heart.

  6. [...] great Mystre set here. It’s my personal second favorite (after Natty Mystic, of course.) I like the second side in particular, from the third track on it’s all really [...]

    hey all..
been listening to this tape (Natural Mystic) since 8th grade, so ‘98? Anyways, never been able to place a track and I have called it “ghost train” for the past decade plus. It’s listed on the new F8 site as Side A Track 6, and would be greatly appreciated if I could finally get a trackname. I remember going into F8 back in the good old days and asking the chick at the reg. if she could place it for me (even had it cued up on my TAPE walkman for her in advance) and she couldnt. Thanks in advance if anybody can place it.

Hey RX, thanks for stopping by.

The track you’re looking for is called “Dance 2 Disco” by Coma B. You can download it here:

The mix is the “Disco Alert Mix”.

    Cheers!

Excellent! Looking for a tracklist for this album and saw The Beatery towards the top of the list. I suppose I still haven’t found a tracklist, but I was excited to wind up back here =D

Oh man this reminds me of the drive from Cupertino (parents’) down to San Luis Obispo (college). I’m going to have a serious M&M fest this week as I drag all of these old mixtapes from the external harddrive back onto my computer. =D

I remember buying these mix tapes on telegraph in Berkeley during the trance explosion of the mid 90s. So cutting edge because of the melodic progressions and awesome sound, I don’t think anything today compares. Thanks for bringing back this classic album! Any more Mystre tapes uploaded would definitely rock!

Hey there! I’m a relative newcomer to electronic music (I was a wee lad of eight years when this mixtape was made) and I’ve been having a blast exploring the earlier side of electronic music here at the Beatery.

I was wondering whether there are still download links available for the Mystre and Mars mixes…? Please let me know. Thanks!

  15. Cor says:

Welcome Rei. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the trance sounds of yore. The fine folks at F8 have all the sets available for purchase for pretty cheap, and the quality will be worlds better than these old mixtapes I’ve recorded for the site. The links are in each post.

Feel free to shoot me an email if I can help… cor@thebeatery.com

Wow, a blast from my past and posted by a kindred spirit too! I also spent my first year at Berkeley in 1998 with this permanently in my walkman. This and Beats4Freaks were probably the main two mixes that got me into trance and house. 2nd and Jackson, baby!

  18. Cor says:

    Hi Phon. Thanks for visiting.

The reason you can’t download it is because we were asked very nicely to remove the download links by the F8 crew, who are still selling the sets (in CD form) on their website. You even get 4 bucks off if you have the old cassette. The link is in the post.

    Cheers!
