Happy 11/11/11! Today instead of bringing you a Beatery Podcast I’m actually being featured on someone ELSE’S internet radio show. Good friend and fellow Weekend Warmup resident Natheus has been banging out the “Electrus Podcast” for a while now to a rather large audience, so I jumped at the chance share an episode with him.
The format is 30 minutes him, 30 minutes me, which just happened to perfectly fit the second part of my KZSU set form Halloween day: the spooky house! I called my part “Dark Rooms”, for reasons that will be obvious when you listen. Eventually I’ll post the mix here, but until then go on over and check it out! Natheus has banging 30 minute house set to kick it off to boot:
So, I’ve had a melody in my head forever. It’s super simple, but by virtue of that it’s been stuck with me for months now without me having any clue what it was. Now that’s got some hookiness.
The melody, it turns out, is from a song by the venerable 4 Strings (known for “Take Me Away”), and it’s the one in the video up top. Thanks to local DJ and friend Ryan Russell for helping me locate it!
I love the sound of this tune - it’s super effective, emotional, and hooky, yet not cheesy. And once again, simple. Good lord. Way to go 4 Strings for doing it again.
Bonus:
Above&Beyond played a special super secret mashup of this tune with Morgan Page’s “The Longest Road” at Trance Around The World 350 in LA . Apparently you can’t find it anywhere, but thanks to the magic of the internets, you can enjoy it on the tube:
DJing on the radio is a weird experience. You’re in this foreign place so it doesn’t have the same feel as playing at home, but you’re also completely by yourself so it’s not at all like spinning at club, disco, lounge, basement or block party. Us DJs feed of he energy of the crowd, so having them out of the equation was certainly a bit odd.
That being said, I had the BEST time on the “The Big Love Show”! This was certainly aided by the massive, ohhh so sweet sounding speakers speakers in Stanford’s KZSU studio, the professionalism of host Jonathan Barns, and all the people who called into the station, texted me and posted to facebook saying that they were digging the music! Thanks so much everyone!
The DJ before me was playing some really techy stuff so I took my time in the beginning working up through progressive house and into some more bouncy Carnival House. The second and third tracks are actually two of my fav prog house releases to come out in recent years so it was great to finally get them on a recording and I know we ALL love the Carnival House. There’s a great blend of classics and brand new tracks on here, be sure to check out the new Yolanda Be Cool (the team that brought you the the 2010 smash hit “We Speak No Americano”) and Bass Kleph joints that I literally got the night before!
So without further adieu here’s part one of my three hour Halloween KZSU “Big Love Show” session!
For lack of a better theme for a post, here’s a few guilty pleasure dance covers that I like. But I only admit to this thanks to the cover of internet anonymity.
To mark my triumphant return to my own blog, I’m excited to announce that I will be laying it down live today on KZSU’s “The Big Love Show!” I’ll be on from 3pm-6pm PST and you can tune in right here:
