Hey there, Beatery faithful! It’s sure been awhile, hasn’t it? You’re looking good; glad to see you’ve been taking care of yourselves. Well, enough chit-chat, I know why you’re here. We’re long overdue for a new podcast.

It’s taken me eight damn months from the time I promised I’d have a podcast of electro swing “soon” to finally deliver this one. No excuses for the delay, I’ll just say that since the genre is still relatively young, and the pool of tracks relatively small, it was pretty hard to for me find a nice eclectic mix of tracks that work together. But lo and behold, I have finally prevailed.*

*And somehow I managed to do so with nary a track from electro swing’s #1 man, Parov Stelar.

Anyhow, consider this an electro swing introduction course. A sample platter. We’ve got some trip-hop, some breaks, a few wobbly baselines for the kids, and of course, good ol’ house… all of it swing-style. Dig in! I hope you enjoy yourselves, and I’ll try not to let as much time pass before the next one. No promises though.

Right along the 246 highway that connects half of western Tokyo together, there’s a little area called Mishuku. It’s a super cute residential neighborhood that’s at once quiet and easily liveable, and also retains some spunk with some killer restaurants and bars.

Though in Mishuku, almost none of the bars are ground level - you either go upstairs, even for music venues, or down into the depths under the street — which feels more natural for vampires like us.

So in tribute to the place I’ve been living for most of my recent sojourns to Japan - here’s some prog flow that’s both comfortably rockin, but got some tech bite and edginess around the sides.

before he was professor x, he was charles…before he was magneto, he was….

…oh oops, wrong movie.
So back in the day, I used to DJ under a different name - the incredibly hard to read “fr33st4t3“.
yup, leet. read “freestate”, and yeah I actually did start using it before the mau5 took leet spelling into the mainstream.

I used this alias from when I started out playing deep house (!), and it took me from there to classic prog, breaks, trance, and back to prog again…

Perhaps a bit of nostalgia has hit me, as I’ve dug up a mix from that time that’s got some serious tunage…some of these tracks are old faves of mine.

A bit different than the sheen and hyped production of modern tracks, but they definitely pump.

See what you think for a ride with a different sound…we go through waves of prog, trance and even some boshed UP breaks tunes in here…

Happy Monday everyone. Have a good weekend? I know you probably spent the entire two days rapt in eager anticipation of our next batch of oldies remixes. Well, your long wait is over, here they are. I have a few house remixes this time, and an awesome breaks remix from a Volkswagen ad that surprisingly didn’t make it into Jay’s Ad-mazing Music series. If you haven’t already seen it like a billion times, definitely check it out after the break. It’s a classic.

Nancy Sinatra - Shot You Down (Audio Bullys Remix)

The Temptations - Papa Was a Rolling Stone (Coburn Remix)

Mint Royale - Singin’ in the Rain

Cure for the Mondays - Broken Oldies (Part 1)

Everyone has those oldies songs they’ve loved since they were kids (the Stand By Me and Big Chill soundtracks pretty much defined my childhood), so today I’m easing the Monday pain with some oldies breakbeat remixes. Now, these aren’t the best-produced tracks in the world (though one of them was remixed by a SYTYCB nominee), above all else they exist for novelty’s sake… to put a smile on your face and bring you way back. Enjoy!

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Tears of a Clown (Hotsnax Remix)

The Chordettes - Mr. Sandman (Squeak E. Clean and Desert Eagles Club Classic)

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - Beggin’ (Stanton Warriors Remix)

NEW FEATURE! Stream all tracks:

Part 2 coming next Monday.

*Mad propers to web comic Married to the Sea for the image. If you haven’t checked them out in a while, head on over for lulz.
