Summer is winding down for us here in the Northern Hemisphere, but we still have a bit more juice left in our long-ish days and nice-ish weather. To help you get the most out what’s left of your summer here are two fantastic, recently released funky mixes that will hopefully inspire you to have one last BBQ, go to one last beach or catch on last ball game.

Enjoy it while you can!

Fort Knox Five - “Endless Summer”

This is an awesome mid-temp funky set that *gasp* actually lets all the great songs play instead of mixing out after 30 seconds! This has become my favorite Fort Knox mix of all time and has to be a top five of 2011.

DJ Dan - “Stereo Damage Ep. 14″

The incomparable Funky/Electro House master is back with fantastic of blend of new grooves and fun, bouncy tracks. Now why ohhhhh why did he not play a set like this at Burning Man this year?? For those who didn’t witness it his Friday night Opulent Temple set was uninspired techy nonsense.

Jalapeno Funk Vol. 2

As I’ve said many times before, good funk is hard to come by in today’s electronic music climate, so it’s especially refreshing to find a record label dedicated to our funkin’ cause. Jalapeno Records is that label, and in their recent compilation Jalapeno Funk Vol. 2 is a tour de force of modern funky production. The track list includes originals and remixes from the likes of A Skillz, Fort Knox Five, Max Sedgley, Kraak & Smaak, All Good Funk Alliance and many other heavy-hitters in the funky house and breaks field. Though some of the tracks can be a bit heavy on the vocals for my taste*, I nevertheless highly recommend the compilation to anyone looking to add more head-bobbing and booty-shaking to their beats. Some highlights…

The Beekeepers - Transcript

Kraak & Smaak - Squeeze Me (A Skillz Remix)

Neighbor - Pistachio Ride

Max Sedgley - Super Strong
*

All Good Funk Alliance - Sock It To Ya (Kraak & Smaak Remix)

PLAY ALL

The full album contains 16 individual tracks, and a skillfully mixed hour-long set of the same songs. It’s a solid purchase, and Jalapeno is definitely a label to keep an ear on.

Buy the album at Amazon, Beatport or iTunes.

*Ahem.

Cure For The Mondays - How I Got my 1st Gig in Bolivia

So for those of you aren’t avid followers of my status updates on Facebook (one of these days I’ll graduate to Twitter… I’m a classic “late majority” guy) I had my first gig down here in La Paz, Bolivia last Friday night! How’d it go?  Well, you kinda got to understand the dynamics of the club a bit.  We will defiantly get there, but first, I wanna share the ridiculous story of how I actually GOT the gig in the fist place.

Getting gigs as a DJ is other worldly hard.  Unless you own a club/series of successful parties, are friends with the former, or produce music and are backed by a label your path to the decks are full of more perils, pitfalls and booby traps than Eddie Murphy’s quest for “The Knife” in “The Golden Child”.

I’ll sprinkle in some the tracks I played that went over well throughout the post:

Fort Knox Five - “The Party Pushers” - Romeo Remix
