Pistachio & Anonymous - A Red Tape

Well since it appears that I’m the only one NOT on vacation, I’m gonna take it upon myself to post an old mix tape that I found.  It’s Pistachio vs Anonymous, and the tape is red.  That’s all I can tell you.  P & A were a couple of random trance DJs here in SF at one point.   I think that I saw them once at an F-8 party in Oakland, like, 10 years ago or so.

And no, that ISN’T their logo.  It just happens to be the greatest possible match from a Google images search ever.

Derek Ryan - Dreaming EP

New release time! This one’s been a long long time coming - it’s been over a year and a half since it was signed to Trance All-Stars records, but it’s finally hit the virtual shelves at beatport, juno, itunes, etc.

As such, it’s got a bit of a different feel to it - more old school in a sense, which can definitely be a good thing! I got a comment to the promo comparing it to Chakra, which makes me happy as a geoduck.

Here’s what the promo blurb said:

In this latest package from San Francisco’s Derek Ryan, whose previous releases on Echelon Records, Noys Music, Cable, and Inspired Records have garnered massive support, we get two solid driving melodic tunes:

Dreaming Awake features the vocal talents of SF local songstress Belinda Yamate and spins a web of melodic textures and growling bass into a whirlwind of light and color for a triumphant finish with a big room boom.

Stealing Stars takes it a notch deeper and massive with evocative textural elements against an undulating groove that build to a starry lead paired with Japanese vocal samples (“Will you steal even the stars from our sky?”) themed around technology encroaching on the natural world, coming together in a huge nocturnal landscape.

Add to that a great remix of Dreaming Awake by Ireland’s Alex Fixed and it’s been getting some pretty solid support so far!

Hope you guys dig it — dunno if you notice, but that’s our own Belinda on vox!

Hola! Damn. It’s already getting near the middle of December and I’m totally not even used to it being 2010 yet!
Here comes the change of decade…

But man, what a year we’ve had for dance music. Some amazing tunes have been released this year in all walks and genres…

I got to throw some of those released in the Progressive/Trance genres together a week ago for friend, fellow producer, and bay area bad boy Means+Function on his monthly net radio broadcast Syncopation.

The result is a blend of textures - light and dark, melodic and techy, but all driving.
Even got a tiny touch of some uplifting psy!

Here’s my guestmix, direct from SoundCloud:

Derek Ryan - Boa Viagem

DJ Derek Ryan, Prog. House2 Comments

boaviagem

Boa Viagem is a strip of beach and glass in the northeast part of Brasil. The city meets the sea here - urban Recife gives way to palms and sand, and expansive shoreline up and down the coast farther than the eye can see, framed by high rises on one side and emerald surf on the other.

Likewise, this mix is a combination of sweet sensual breezes and hard technology, with a dash of surrealism.
Between lighter walks on the sands in the morning, and the patter of tropical rain in the afternoon, moving into street darkness and mechanical wonders at night, to a dawn over the surf, a serving of progressive house to take you through the sun cycle on Boa Viagem.

Fulla Stars

Whoa. Just moments ago I was yet a mere guest DJ and now I have been initiated into the hallowed halls and clandestine logins of the secret order of the Beatery.

And man, am I stoked to be here!
I’m honored that Cor, Jay, and Matt have welcomed me in to be part of the family!
I’ll be giving some major love to the realms of progressive, trance, and my secret dark lover drum n bass, so stay tuned…

I was planning for my first post as a resident editor to be super bangin, but then I got all spacey…^_^

I spent last weekend in bliss, dancing and DJing under the stars.

Out near Willits, in the middle of the forest, there’s no light pollution (except for the trippy lasers on the dancefloor!), so the whole of the night starscape is your playground — surrounded by swirling rhythms and flashing lights on the ground, then you look up and the vault of the heavens expands in every direction.

Then when your body tires, nothing beats laying down on the grass, looking upwards, and letting the vastness consume you.

This mix was made just after returning, and is born out of that feeling — of staring at the nocturnal sky in awe.
